Coronavirus in Canada Though it is still unclear when the vaccine will be approved for children aged 5 to 11, parents in British Columbia can now register their children for the vaccine in anticipation. And, the Lake Babine Nation has declared a COVID-19 state of emergency with two to three members a day testing positive. Restaurants Canada is calling on the Ontario government to immediately lift all further restrictions on the restaurant industry and provide additional support to recognize the cost of implementing the vaccine passport program. Saskatchewan may soon make an official request to the federal government for help as hospitalizations continue to break new records almost daily. Quebec is reporting 602 new cases of COVID-19 and two additional deaths. Health care systems across the country are scrambling to avoid disruptions in service ahead of mandatory vaccination deadlines, as tens of thousands of workers in the sector remain unvaccinated despite the threat of unpaid leave in some provinces.
“There’s likely going to be some short-term pain,” said Katharine Smart, president of the Canadian Medical Association, regarding the number of health care staff who aren’t fully vaccinated ahead of vaccine deadlines for health care workers. Mandatory vaccines for Mounties: The union representing RCMP officers “will continue to support members’ access to vaccines, and their choice to be vaccinated or not,” according to a statement from the National Police Federation.
Coronavirus around the world Brazil appears intent on returning to prepandemic normalcy, even as its death toll tops 600,000, according to official data from the country’s Health Ministry. The United States will accept international visitors who are vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccines authorized by U.S. regulators or the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Sydney, Australia, was set to reopen after months in lockdown, with businesses reading themselves to welcome fully vaccinated residents starting Monday. Coronavirus and business The Bank of Canada’s pandemic fears have gone in the opposite direction: to inflation.
Inflation has run above the central bank’s target range of 1 per cent to 3 per cent since April, hitting an 18-year high of 4.1 per cent in August. Now, economists around the world are debating if this is a sign that unprecedented fiscal stimulus and wide-open monetary policy during the pandemic has caused inflation to become unmoored. And: Canada’s path to pandemic recovery is being hampered by automakers who struggle with supply chain issues.
