Jaysley Beck's heartbroken mum speaks out after Army failings 'played part' in death

The mother of a 19-year-old soldier who died by suicide in her barracks has said, "No apology will bring our daughter back" after a coroner found that Army failure had contributed to her death.

Coroner Nicholas Rheinberg spoke of failure on behalf of the Army to take action in relation to the "prolonged" harassment that Jaysley Beck had been subjected to by her line manager Bombardier Ryan Mason.

The inquest heard that Mr Mason sent 4,600 messages to Gunner Beck and showed her a 15-page "love story he had written with "fantasies about her".

The coroner described a failure on behalf of the Army to take appropriate action against the officer to who Gunner Beck reported over an alleged sexual assault.

She filed a complaint against Battery Sergeant Major Michael Webber, describing how he had "pinned her down" and tried to kiss her.

The inquest heard that, after the incident, Gunner Beck called her friend Lance Bombardier Kirsty Davis, "frightened and in tears."

The coroner said Gunner Beck was pressured to drop the complaint by Captain James Hook.

The incident was later recorded as 'inappropriate behaviour unbecoming of a warrant officer'.

The coroner said that "on the balance of probabilities" Gunner Beck was sexually assaulted by Mr Webber, and it "should have been reported to police and the failure to do so breached Army policy".

Speaking following the inquest’s conclusion, Jaysley Beck’s mother, Leighann McCready, told reporters: “Jaysley was so much more than a soldier – she was our daughter, a sister to Emily and a friend to so many.

“She was kind, caring and truly loved by everyone who knew her. She was full of life, bright and absolutely fantastic at her job.

“The army itself has said exactly the kind of person they wanted to join – she should still be here."

“Today, the coroner has made a number of extremely critical findings against the Army, and they have found that they have contributed to our daughter’s death.

“The Army has admitted that it let Jaysley down, and has apologised for its failings – but no apology will ever bring our daughter back.”

Addressing the Prime Minister Ms McCready, said: “This message is to Sir Keir Starmer and our Government – things need to change.

“The Army cannot be allowed to investigate itself anymore when it comes to cases of sexual harassment, assault, bullying and abuse.

“Too often, servicewomen and men don’t feel able to speak up out of fear of being victimised – and even when they do, the Army is left to investigate itself.

“This cannot continue. There needs to be an independent body responsible for investigating those more serious cases, which is completely separate from the Army – only then can we ensure true accountability, real justice and genuine change.”

Ending her statement, she said: “The only comfort we have now is knowing that hundreds of people in the military have come forward, sharing their own experiences and seeking support.

“No one should have to suffer in silence.

“There are independent sources of help available, and we urge anyone affected to reach out. You are not alone.

“Jaysley should still be here. We won’t stop fighting until meaningful action is taken.”

Coroner Rheinberg said that he would not be preparing a report to prevent future deaths as he had been “reassured” by the Army that “matters are currently under review and revision”.
