But she would lose her foot if she went without it. Becky, 32, chose to save her unborn baby and had the foot amputated three weeks later. She said: “It was a shock but we made the best decision. My foot was quite at risk anyway.” Having been born with spina bifida, she had been having issues with the foot before the infection took hold.

       Becky, from Swansea, said: “It was quite hard after the amputation. My husband Richard had to take 10 months off work unpaid to take over my role in the house as well as looking after me. It was a time when I was quite depressed. I didn’t feel like I could be a proper mum.

       “I was stuck in this wheelchair and I couldn’t do the things I thought I should be doing as a new mum.” Five months after baby Caitlyn was born, Becky took her first walk with her: “That was just the best feeling ever.”

       She added: “There are months when I have to be in my wheelchair as I can’t put the leg on due to the pain.

       “I couldn’t even do the basic mum things like taking my kids to school.That’s all I wanted to do – be able -to take them to school and pick -them up.”

       Caitlyn is now seven and Becky says she tries hard to be the best mum she can to her and other daughters Lacey, 13, and Mia, 10, and stepdaughter, Ruby, aged 12.

       Becky had further post-amputation surgery in January, following complications. While recovering she came into contact with AmpCamp Kids, a group which supports child amputees.

       On July 31, Becky aims to climb 2,907ft Pen-y-Fan mountain in the Brecon Beacons with 40 relatives, friends and other amputees to help pay for six amputee children and their families to go on a specialist holiday to Tenerife.

       She said: “I have never been one to exercise too much due to the pain. Some days I have to rest. I can’t do everything I want to do.

       “I just wanted to do something to push myself and to help other people. I am nervous about the climb, but even if I have to stop a million times, I will get to the top.

       “It was a bit of an inspiration, seeing [the amputee] kids and how they tackle life with a smile – wow!”
