The Conservative Party’s new star Red Wall batsman has come out swinging, after left-wingers and Remoaners criticised his appointment.
Jonathan Gullis, the outspoken no-nonsense MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, has gained a reputation since the election for his forthright views on immigration and wokeness.

In a signal of cross-party unity after the recent turbulence following Lee Anderson’s defection, Rishi Sunak yesterday appointed him to the crucial campaigning job of Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party.
Mr Gullis said he was “honoured to be asked by the Prime Minister” to take on the role.
He warned: “I’m ready to take the fight to Sir Keir’s hopeless and hapless Labour Party.

“By sticking to the plan, we’ll grow the economy, stop the boats & level up across the country.”
Reacting to the news, Conservative Chairman Richard Holden said he was delighted that the “inimitable” Jonathan Gullis was joining his “formidable” team ahead of the election.
However left-wingers reacted furiously to the appointment, with top Remainer and former MP Anna Soubry remarking: “This is what desperation looks like.”
Without missing a beat, Mr Gullis slapped down Ms Soubry, merely quoting it with a picture of her infamous Nando’s meal when she left the Conservative Party to join the short-lived Independent Group.
The photo, of the 11 MP defectors, has become short-hand for political failure, after every single one of the MPs pictured subsequently lost their seats in the 2019 General Election.

Ms Soubry herself managed to muster just 8.5% at the last election when standing for the new party, a substantial fall from grace after being touted as a Tory rising star who claimed the ministerial greasy poll.

This morning the Spectator described Mr Gullis’s appointment as Mr Sunak’s “most striking appointment” during yesterday’s reshuffle.
The mini shake-up of Government came after the dual resignations of Defence Minister James Heappey and Education Minister Robert Halfon.
Mr Gullis, who replaces Lee Anderson, has previously been a thorn in the Government’s side, including rebelling over the Windsor Framework last year.
