KUCHING: Sarawak's new Covid-19 cases continued to surpass the 2,000-mark with 2,414 on Wednesday (Sept 1).

The state disaster management committee said there were also seven new fatalities, pushing the death toll to 533.

The latest deaths comprised four women and three men, aged between 62 and 85.

Of the new cases, nearly half or 1,031 were from Kuching, followed by Bintulu with 174, Sibu (121), Subis (115) and Betong (107).

Another 27 districts recorded between one and 92 cases each, bringing the state's cumulative tally to 118,972.

"A total of 2,407 or 99.7% of the cases are in Category 1 (asymptomatic) and 2 (mild symptoms).

"There are three cases in Category 4 (symptomatic and requiring oxygen) and four cases in Category 5 (symptomatic and requiring a ventilator)," the committee said in a statement.

It said 1,761 of the cases were close contacts with Covid-19 patients and 234 from active clusters.

There were eight imported cases involving individuals returning from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kedah and Sabah.

The committee also said two new clusters were detected in Limbang.

The Menuang Baru cluster involved the Rumah Manggi Kampung Menuang Baru longhouse with 70 confirmed cases to date.

The Sebayang-Stalun cluster was detected at the Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline construction site at Kem 4, Kem Stalun Fly and Kem Sebayang at Long Rayeh.

Currently, it has 16 confirmed cases out of 21 people screened.
