KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) is identifying suitable clouds to enable the seeding process in Sabah, says State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong.

       He said the exercise is currently underway after a favourable response from the Federal Government on the state's request to carry out cloud seeding.

       The Sabah government had requested the procedure from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) after water catchment areas dried up and wildfires increased across the state last week.

       "The department is identifying the right type of cloud for the seeding process because not all clouds are suitable," he told reporters after a PETRONAS iftar programme here on Thursday (March 15).

       "The seeding process will be carried out once the right clouds are identified," added Safar, who is also the state natural disaster management committee chairman.

       On the current hot and dry spell, he said the situation remained under control despite south-western Papar district being declared a drought emergency area.

       He said the state government has increased water deliveries to affected areas statewide and also supplied water tanks to the people.
