Mum who attacked custody officer gets time off curfew for Spain holiday

Louise Whelan, who has a string of previous convictions, is awaiting sentencing for assaulting a detention officer during the first national lockdown. The 31-year-old yob assaulted the officer and subjected them to threatening or abusive language in a foul rant.

The prosecutor at South Sefton Magistrates Court in Merseyside applied for conditional bail today, including a curfew between 7pm and 7am with electronic monitoring.

But this was suspended for four days to allow mum-of-two Whelan to enjoy a trip in Spain and attend a friend's wedding in the sun.

The court heard Whelan had a "pre-booked holiday to Spain".

So Whelan will eventually be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on October 5.

The court heard the defendant's previous convictions include breaching lockdown rules to go to McDonalds to "look for fit fellas" and being involved in a vile homophobic attack with her two sisters.

And then, on March 31 last year, Whelan assaulted the detention officer at Wirral Custody Suite.

Whelan, from Poulton, Merseyside, pleaded guilty today to common assault and using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause distress.

She was arrested on a warrant issued when she failed to attend court on September 6, on further charges of stealing a £4.99 stool from the B&M store.

The mum had previously avoided a prison sentence in July 2019 because of her children, and received a 15-month suspended sentence after being found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court of hurling homophobic insults and threatening a man during a vile incident in Birkenhead, Merseyside, alongside two sisters, one of whom was wielding a hammer.

In June this year, Whelan was found in breach of the suspended sentence after being caught shoplifting three times from the Asda store in Birkenhead on October 24, 2020 with an accomplice before making off in her Mercedes.

She also walked free on that occasion due to her children, with the judge handing her three months in jail, suspended for 12 months, a 'Thinking Skills Programme', and 10-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.
