KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 4,000 people have been displaced by the floods in Segamat, says the Inspector-General of Police.

Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani (pic) said 1,047 families involving 3,961 victims were affected there.

He said he visited the command centre at the Segamat police club hall on Tuesday with the Internal Security and Public Order director and acting Johor police chief to observe the preparations and deployment of Johor police for the flood operations.

“I was briefed that the victims were taken to 53 temporary flood relief centres in the district,” he said.

Acryl Sani said six agencies were involved in the operations in Segamat, adding that this involved 377 personnel from the army, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, Rela, SMART, as well as 304 police personnel.

“The police and all the other agencies involved are doing everything possible in Segamat and other locations affected by floods in Johor to evacuate the victims.”

Acryl Sani said police were also committed to helping the victims get their basic needs.

“I have ordered Internal Security and Public Order director Comm Datuk Hazani Ghazali to coordinate the aid efforts.

“A police air wing unit helicopter will also be deployed to send basic needs to people in Segamat as many roads have been inundated,” he said, adding that the General Operations Force, marine police, air wing unit and Federal Reserve Unit personnel would also be deployed for cleaning up of public infrastructure and places of worship in Segamat.
