Meghan Markle and Prince Harry 'want media spotlight' despite royal exit: 'Strange place'

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals last year and moved to the US to lead a more private life. Just this week, Meghan has been in court as Associated Newspapers appeals a decision from earlier this year that they breached the Duchess’ privacy by publishing extracts of a letter she sent to her father.

Meghan apologised for “not remembering” email exchanges between her communications secretary and the authors of unofficial biography ‘Finding Freedom’.

While Meghan has made it very clear that she and Harry want privacy for themselves and their family, it has been argued by others that the couple still “want” the media spotlight, because it gives them a platform to talk about issues that are important to them.

Relationship expert Neil Wilkie spoke to Express.co.uk about the couple’s relationship and how it is shaping their actions in their new life together.

The Sussexes initially hit it off by talking about their charitable causes and it remains a hugely important part of their lives today.

Mr Wilkie said “Rather than avoiding the media spotlight, they want it on them because they want to be able to say things which might give them purpose and credibility.

“I think they've been badly advised, and I just wonder whether the advice is coming from people who they are paying to advise them.

“Often that gets into a cycle of creating work for the advisors rather than creating the best result for the clients.

“The media world in America and LA is very different to the media world in the UK.

“It's much more about shouting loudly rather than subtly, I suppose.”

In recent months the Sussexes have used their media platform to champion several different causes.

In September, the pair called for greater COVID-19 vaccine equity across the world as they appeared at the Global Citizen Live concert as part of their tour of New York City.

Meghan then wrote a letter to senior House Democrats last month in which she advocated for paid leave for new parents.

However, Mr Wilkie claimed that the couple’s passionate statements on issues they care about may be falling on deaf ears.

He claimed: “It almost feels like both Meghan and Harry are shouting into an echo chamber, and then not getting any real response.

“You have to almost keep saying things louder or more outrageously to continue to get media attention.

“I think the two of them have a great loving relationship and she supports him, he supports her.”

Mr Wilkie is the author of ‘The Relationship Paradigm’ series of books and creator of the online couples therapy platform, the Relationship Paradigm.
