Two adults and a child were killed after their vehicle was hit by a Metra train Sunday evening on the Far South Side, officials said.

       About 5 p.m., an inbound train collided with a vehicle at West 107th Street and South Vincennes Avenue in the East Beverly neighborhood, according to officials. The car ended up near 103rd Street after being pushed by the Rock Island District line train, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

       The adults and a child in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fire Department officials.

       The train’s conductor and engineer reported injuries, but they were not considered to be life-threatening, Reile said.

       Witnesses at the scene told authorities that vehicles were stopped at the lowered gate near 107th when a car went around it.

       The train’s front car partially derailed as a result of the crash, Reile said, and the vehicle caught fire.

       The train’s speed at the time of the crash was unknown, but the speed limit in the crash area is 79 mph, Reile said. There was no information indicating that gates or systems were not working, she said, but the investigation is continuing.

       There were 41 passengers on the train, Reile said. Three passengers reported injuries, and two of them asked to be taken to area hospitals.

       Other passengers were taken to the 95th Street Red Line station to continue their commutes.

       The train was headed to Chicago from Joliet, where it departed at 4:25 p.m., Reile said. Its last stop was at the Blue Island Vermont Street station shortly before 5 p.m.

       Trains were routed through the Beverly Branch on Sunday night, Reile said, and passengers should continue to check Metra alerts.
