Smugglers are “streamlining” their operations to move asylum seekers swiftly into the UK.
And criminal groups referred to as the “mafia” are ruling over the migrant camps in northern France, resorting to extreme violence and forcing those staying there to pay for goods handed out by charities, researchers from the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime said.
More than 18,000 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year.

And Downing Street has predicted the number of arrivals will increase this Summer, despite the Labour Government's pledge to “smash the gangs”.

The smuggling operation is becoming increasingly intricate (Image: Getty)
Researchers from GIATOC highlighted how intricate these criminal networks are, operating across borders on nearly every stage of their enterprise.
Analysts believe more migrants are being held further inland in France, in places such as Paris, Reims, Rouen, Arras, Lille and Cambrai.
But there is also evidence of asylum seekers being kept in Belgium, in safe houses near Brussels, Antwerp, Gent and Bruges.
Migrants are also known to regularly stay in Germany, with homes identified in Bonn, Cologne, Frankfurt, Essen, Dusseldorf, Bochum and Dortmund.
They are given key pieces of information for their journeys and structures are put in place to ensure the smuggling business continues to run smoothly between crossings.
The researchers said: “The smugglers will rent a property in these towns and fill it with migrants or use an intermediary who can provide a property.
“Some migrants, however, choose to stay closer to the coastal areas, often in hotels that are known for accommodating almost exclusively migrants, refugees and low-level smugglers during the Summer months, when weather conditions are more amenable for the crossing.
“These hotels are among the cheaper options on offer and in some cases reportedly provide additional services, such as shipping migrants’ luggage to the UK upon arrival.
“They also act as recruitment hubs for smugglers and some hotels reportedly offer discounts on accommodation for smugglers’ clients.”
Charities working in France have identified vehicles with Belgian, German and Dutch number plates at a notorious migrant camp near Dunkirk.
And researchers added: “One source reported seeing 15 French taxis at the same time at Loon-Plage, and even a coach full of migrants.

“Taxi drivers in Lille spoke of the regular work they have taxiing migrants. When migrants leave the airport, they already know the price of the journey to Calais, according to the driver.
“Their smugglers have provided them with such information.”
Once the migrants have been moved from their “holding” areas, they will be rushed towards the coast. Smugglers want them to be on a boat within 24 hours of them leaving.
Researchers added: “Testifying to increased streamlining of operations of smugglers, migrants stay in the transit hubs for much shorter periods of time (24 hours to three weeks) compared to the three months that was the norm until early 2021.
“In good weather, hubs like Grande-Synthe are almost completely empty, such is the speed of the turnaround.
“After sending off boats, smugglers contact migrants on the waiting list and the next influx begins.
“Tents are often left for newcomers, including sleeping bags, blankets, clothes and kitchen equipment.”
The 'mafia' are said to use extreme violence and researchers were told that one Afghan boy, suffering from hypothermia, was then beaten to death.
The majority of the camps and smuggling routes are controlled by Iraqi-Kurdish smuggling gangs.
And the 'mafia' will target those asylum seekers from different cultural backgrounds or countries, it is understood.
