Angela Rayner was left red-faced at PMQs after Tory shadow Chancellor Mel Stride exposed her leadership hopes as Keir Starmer flounders.
Taking to his feet the top Tory joked: “It is a pleasure to stand opposite the Rt Hon lady. Despite what many may think we have a great deal in common - not least that we both viscerally disagree with the Chancellor’s tax policies.”

“And it is great to see [Angela Rayner] standing in temporarily for the Prime Minister for the second week running, although I know there are many sitting behind her who wish this were a permanent arrangement!”
He spent much of his questions exposing Labour’s huge civil war on benefit cuts, as the PM is considering having to make a humiliating U-turn in the face of his biggest rebellion yet.
The rebellion against the measure has continued to grow, with at least 123 Labour MPs now signed up to a Commons amendment opposing the measure - enough for the Government to lose the vote unless the rebels back down, and there is no sign of them doing so.

The Personal Independence Payment cuts would mean 800,000 people lose an average of £4,500 annually and this would lead to an extra 250,000 people in poverty, including 50,00 children.
But if Sir Keir does perform a u-turn, it will leave a £4.1 billion black hole in the Treasury’s finances, as that’s how much the changes would have saved.

Keir Starmer announces defence spending increase
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced he will increase UK defence spending to 4.1% of GDP by 2027, rising to 5% of GDP by 2035.
Britain's new nuclear bombers will keep the nation safe "in volatile times" the Prime Minister also declared, as he warned the UK faces "threats at home all the time." Speaking at a NATO summit in the Hague, he said the summit had sent "a decisive message to aggressors" after the Government warned this week that the UK must prepare for war.

Jeremy Corbyn has final question
The former Labour leader raises killings in Gaza. He asks why the UK supplies parts for jets and asks why Britain stands on the "wrong side of international law".
Angela Rayner lists actions to oppose escalation of the situation.
The Commons then empties. Labour MPs can doubtless now expect calls from whips urging them to get on board with welfare reforms so Keir Starmer does not risk humiliation when he returns to the UK.

The Conservative offer to support Labour's benefit cuts
Shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride urged Angela Rayner to commit to reducing the welfare bill, in exchange for the Tories’ support for Government reforms.
He told the Commons: “Well, there you have it, there will be a vote in this House on Tuesday on the welfare Bill, although many on the backbenches could be forgiven for thinking they’ve heard this before with the winter fuel payment, where they were marched up the hill, and we all know where that story ended.
“But on this side of the House, we are absolutely clear, we will help her to get their Bill through, if they can commit to actually reducing the welfare bill and getting people off benefits and into work. Can (Ms Rayner) make that commitment right now, yes or no?”
The Deputy Prime Minister replied: “Well, if ever we needed a reminder of the party opposite having no shame, it’s their demands for this Bill.
“He demands a programme to help people into work – exactly what this Bill does – after he left one in eight young people out of the economy.”

How could a u-turn take place?
There are reports that Sir Keir could announce a change to the benefits policy as soon as today.
But whenever it comes, he is extremely unlikely to allow a vote to take place on Tuesday if he is certain to lose it - which he probably will unless Labour rebels back down, and there's no sign of that happening.
One option for Sir Keir is to announce a "delay" so that more assessments can be carried out on the impact of the policy. That means that when a change of policy is announced, it can be portrayed as being a result of new information, and not something that has been forced on him by Labour rebels.

Will Donald Trump defend NATO allies such as the UK?
US President Donald Trump has cast doubt on whether the US would come to the aid of allies such as the UK if we were attacked.
He was asked about Article 5 of the NATO treaty. This says that an attack on one NATO country is treated as an attack on all of them, and they all must respond.
But Mr Trump said: "Depends on your definition. There are numerous definitions of Article 5. You know that, right? But I’m committed to being their friends."
Asked about Donald Trump’s apparent wavering on the meaning of Nato’s Article 5, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said today: “Nato is as relevant and as important today as it’s ever been.
“We live in a very volatile world, and today is about the unity of Nato, showing that strength.
“We’re bigger than we were before, we’re stronger than we were before.”
Asked if he would seek clarity from Mr Trump over his commitment to Article 5, Sir Keir said: “I think it’s very important that we stand here as allies, and we do stand here as allies, coming together, absolutely committed to the importance of Nato, particularly at this point in a very volatile world.”

No immediate threat of invasion - but we must be ready
Asked about warnings in the Government’s national security strategy that Britain needs to be prepared for the risk of war on home soil, Defence Secretary John Healey replied: “Nobody expects an invasion of Britain today or tomorrow.

We're not in a new cold war, says Defence Secretary
The UK’s decision to buy a new fleet of fighter jets which can carry nuclear weapons is not a return to the Cold War, John Healey said.
Asked by LBC if the programme to buy a fleet of F35A jets marked a return to the Cold War, when Russia threatened the USA and its allies including the UK, the Defence Secretary replied: “No, it’s not.”
The move is part of Nato’s efforts to “make us all safer now and for the years to come”, he added.
The Defence Secretary said he wanted to see the jets start to be delivered “before the end of the decade”.
