MIRI: The wipeout of Parti Keadilan Rakyat in the recent Melaka State Election is not an indication of its fate in the Sarawak polls, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

While admitting to the party’s weaknesses in Melaka, the PKR president said the two elections were different.

“Did Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) contest in Melaka? That is an important thing to note.

“I do accept that we had weaknesses in Melaka that need to be improved.

“This, we will try our best to explain to the people in Sarawak,” Anwar said during his campaign trail in Bekenu on Monday (Dec 13).

Recently, Parti Pesaka Bersatu Bumiputera (PBB) deputy president Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan claimed that PKR has no credibility to govern Sarawak, as shown in the party’s dismal performance in the Melaka polls.

PKR failed to win a single seat in the Melaka State Election a month ago.

On another matter, Anwar said feedback from supporters in Sarawak was positive, despite the limitations imposed on campaigning.

“The response has been good so far but we are not able to campaign openly.

“This has prevented us from getting close to voters situated in remote areas,” he said.

Anwar has been in Sarawak since the weekend to provide support to PKR’s 27 candidates contesting in the election.

On Saturday (Dec 11), he visited the Beting Maro, Saribas and Tebedu constituencies in the southern region.

On Sunday (Dec 12), he headed north to campaign at the Lambir and Bekenu constituencies.
