PETALING JAYA: Melaka voters will choose a new state government on Nov 20.

The election is being held following the dissolution of the state assembly after four assemblyman withdrew their support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

A total of 28 state seats will be contested, with early voting on Nov 16.

There will be 495,195 voters eligible to cast their ballots.

Following are some key facts about the state election.

This is the second time that the state government has collapsed since the 14th general election (GE14) which was held in May 2018.

Pakatan Harapan won Melaka in GE14 when the coalition won 15 of the 28 seats, giving it a narrow two-seat majority.

The state government however lasted less than two years.

It fell in March last year after two Pakatan Harapan assemblymen - DAP's Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee and PKR’s Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis announced that they now supported Perikatan Nasional.

The Barisan Nasional/Perikatan Nasional-led state government that replaced it also did not last.

Last month, Umno's Datuk Seri Idris Haron and Nor Azman Hassan, together with Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad from Bersatu and Norhizam withdrew their support, leading to the dissolution of the Melaka state assembly.

A total of 112 candidates are entering the ring this time around, up from 85 who contested in GE14.

Below are the coalitions and parties contesting:
