KLANG: Roads here were jam-packed with traffic when about 4,000 flood victims lined up the streets at Kemuning Utama in Shah Alam to collect relief aid from the Selangor government.
The recipients who were victims of the severe flash floods that hit Shah Alam and Klang in December last year came to collect the cash handouts under the state government’s “Bantuan Selangor Bangkit” initiative.
The victims received RM1,000 for each household under the initiative. It is believed the state government was handing out the aid in stages.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was quoted as saying last month that 33,130 families had received the payout amounting to RM33.25mil up to Jan 14.
The application for the aid was concluded at the end of last month.
However, there were some people like mother of three Nodiana Muda, 35, who said she had not applied for the fund as she did not know how to go about it.
“We were too busy cleaning up and getting our lives back to normal. That’s why we missed out on the announcement,” she added.
P. Punithemalar, 34, and her husband S. Deepan, 36, said they have yet to receive word to go and collect the money.
“We had put in the application. We hope to get the aid soon as we lost everything in the flood, including my husband’s lorry which was our source of income,” said Punithemalar, who lives in Taman Sri Muda with their eight-year-old daughter.
