KUALA LUMPUR: A group of NGOs are seeking for updates from authorities about a preacher who allegedly insulted non-Muslim religions as well as the Dayak community.
“We have been lodging reports since October but until now, we have yet to see any movement,” said Global Human Rights Federation president S. Shashi Kumar.
He said a memorandum signed by 62 groups had been sent to Bukit Aman.
The memorandum sent on Tuesday (Dec 14) was related to a preacher seen in a viral video making the remarks.
In the video, the preacher allegedly made remarks claiming that Muslims would be prosecuted when the “end of the world” comes around.
“The preacher claimed that the video was taken out of context so we have sent the full video to the police. But until now, there hasn’t been any follow up,” Kumar said.
He also said that he had emailed the Inspector-General of Police and the Special Investigation Unit (USJT) seeking updates on the matter.
“I was told that the USJT is currently investigating it.”
“Next week, I will send a similar memorandum to the Attorney General’s Chambers and then the Home Ministry,” he said.
He lamented about worsening discrimination and racism against non-Muslims, adding that a Religious and Racial Hatred Bill should be tabled in Parliament.
