Richard Dawkins in anti-religion rant: 'Blighted by ignorant religion and superstition'

Dawkins, who is perhaps most well known for his anti-religious beliefs, was commenting on the “wonder” of the World Wide Web. But he couldn’t resist attacking religion in the meantime, dismissing life-guiding beliefs as destructive to the progression of human knowledge.

In a post on Twitter, Dawkins wrote: “The World Wide Web is a wonder of our time, a blessing despite vulnerability to abuse.

“Literally at our fingertips is a massive encyclopaedia of all human knowledge.”

This alone was unlikely to rattle many minds.

But he added: “It gives hope for parts of the world benighted by ignorant religion and superstition.”

Following this, Dawkins has been accused of failing to notice the difference between wisdom on one and knowledge on the other.

The Bow Group Chairman Ben Harris-Quinney told Express.co.uk: “The spread of the internet has not on its own enlightened the world as Dawkins hoped because wisdom and knowledge are two different things, and outside of a framework of morals raw knowledge often leads to horrific evils.”

He added that attacks on faith in recent decades, such as this one, have not resulted in a “happier, more just, more contented society”, but “exactly the opposite”.

He said: “Judeo-Christian civilisation has given us the most free, prosperous and enlightened civilisation on earth, we are beginning to see what Dawkin's alternative looks like, and it is merely decline and fall from grace.”

A Reformed Baptist lay preacher from Cornwall going by the name of Bob Lollard, who read the tweet while having dinner with members of his congregation, also told Express.co.uk that while the group agreed the internet has been a blessing, “in spite of abuse”, the idea it that liberates ‘superstitious’ minds from religion is “frankly laughable”.

He added: “How can one look at the last decade of political misinformation and say that the internet can free people from ignorance?

“Religion in this case is a cheap scapegoat for a shallow argument not rooted in the reality of our times.”

Dawkins ended his Twitter post by thanking Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web in 1989, for his creation.

‘HeyZeus’ wrote in response: “God gave it to us. Thank him.”

One of the world’s most prominent modern atheists, Dawkins has dedicated much of his career to criticising religious belief.

He is perhaps most well known for his 1976 book “The Selfish Gene” and, more recently, for his 2006 book “The God Delusion”.

In “The God Delusion”, he argued: “Faith can be very very dangerous, and deliberately to implant it into the vulnerable mind of an innocent child is a grievous wrong.”

In his most recent book, “Flights of Fancy”, Dawkins has returned to the topic which appears to be closest to his heart – evolutionary biology.
