Prince Charles' Welsh language skills laid bare - 'What a Principality!'

The future King invited Simon Armitage to Llwynywermod, his home in the depths of the Carmarthenshire countryside earlier this week. And he has also demonstrated his language skills in public on numerous occasions, including before his investiture at Caernarfon Castle.

But, like so many of his neighbours in Myddfai, Charles has the partial ability to speak Welsh.

As shown in Netflix's historical drama The Crown, the 72-year-old was tasked with learning the Welsh language before the 1969 investiture.

He said in Welsh: "It is, indeed, my firm intention to associate myself in word and deed with as much of the life of the Principality as possible—and what a Principality!"

The Prince told of the challenges learning the language poses in ITV documentary 'Charles: 50 Years a Prince'.

He said: "I did my utmost to learn as much as I could.

"But in a term it's quite difficult, and I'm not as brilliant a linguist as I'd like to be."

Charles also showcased his Welsh language skills opening the Ysbyty Calon Y Ddraig in 2020.

The Prince of Wales greeted the audience in Welsh by saying "boneddigion a boneddigesau" - which translates to ladies and gentlemen.

Speaking to Mr Armitage, the Prince of Wales spoke further about his passion for the nation: “It is wonderful coming down here.

“And I love coming in the winter when I can at a weekend.

“And I stump about in the Brecon Beacons and explore, which is magic, and fight my way through large numbers of sheep all over the place. It is very special because it’s more of a cottage.”

He moved to Carmarthenshire in 2006.

In 2009, the Duke of Cornwall became patron of Llandovery Rugby Football Club.

But the rugby-loving historic county of Dyfed - where Llwynywermod is located - also happens to have a disproportionately high number of Welsh speakers.

According to the 2011 census, Carmarthenshire has the highest number of Welsh speakers in Wales - with over four in 10 residents claiming to have the ability to converse in the language.

Charles was taught Welsh by nationalist politician Edward Millward.

Mr Millward, who passed away in 2020, was Vice President of Plaid Cymru and rejected invitations to attend Charles' investiture or wedding to Lady Diana Spencer.

Aside from English and some Welsh, Charles is believed to be fluent in French and German.
