BUTTERWORTH: A 17-year-old teenager was killed after the car she was in crashed into a tree on Jalan Air Hitam in Tasek Gelugor here.

       North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Radzi Ahmad said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene in the incident that occurred at about 7.45am Tuesday (March 1).

       “Investigations found that the car was travelling from Guar Petai heading towards Sungai Dua when the driver lost control after making a right turn and crashed into a tree on the right side of the road,” he said.

       The teenager was a student at a tahfiz school in Sungai Dua and was on her way to school.

       ACP Radzi said the driver of the car and the other three passengers in the rear seat escaped serious injuries and were taken to Hospital Kepala Batas for further treatment.

       A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said six firemen from the Kepala Batas fire station were sent to the scene after receiving distress calls from the public.

       “When firemen arrived, they saw that one of the victims in the back seat of the car was trapped. Firemen used rescue tools to free the victims,” he said.

       The operation ended at about 9.30am Tuesday.
