JOHOR BARU: Dozens of people have rushed to two district police headquarters here to take advantage of the 80% discount offered for outstanding traffic summonses.
A check by the Star at Kulai and the Johor Baru South police headquarters saw the areas flooded with people who wanted to pay their summonses.
At the Kulai police headquarters, many cars were seen parked along the road near the police station as people waited for their turn to enjoy the 80% discount.
Lorry driver Mohd Noor Arsat, 53 said he had been waiting since 7.30am to pay his 12 summonses, accumulated over the past four years.
"I know that it will surely take a long time for me to pay the summonses today as it is a Sunday and many people are free to pay their summons. It is also the last day for the discount for police traffic summonses,” he said.
"It is also rare to see an 80% discount for traffic summonses as usually the discount would only be about 50%," he added, saying that he managed to pay his summons at about 12pm.
Meanwhile, at the Johor Baru South police headquarters, small business owner P. Selvaraju, 58, said he took an e-hailing ride from his house in Skudai to pay his summonses.
"I went to the Skudai police station as it is near my house but was told to come here instead. It is not easy for me as my left arm is paralysed after getting a stroke. I hope that the payment system could be more friendly towards people with disabilities and the elderly," he said.
It was learnt that a system failure nationwide had slowed down the payment process at police headquarters offering the discounts.
Prior to this, it was announced that discounts of up to 80% on selected traffic summonses would be offered until Sunday (Dec 12) to mark the 100-Day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family Aspiration) celebration.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Mat Kasim Karim said the discounts were being offered to coincide with the launch of the celebration by the Prime Minister.
"Summonses can be paid at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) counter, traffic summonses at district and state police headquarters, and through the MyBayar Saman portal throughout the four days.
"Discounts are not offered for summonses pertaining to accidents, overtaking on double lines, using the emergency lane, running through a red light, overtaking dangerously, non-compoundable offences, offences under trial, heavy vehicle offences and modification of vehicle exhausts," he said in a statement.
