Hundreds of England fans without tickets clashed with security and police, as they attempted to enter the stadium. After the match began police outside were pelted with bottles and other missiles.

Eyewitness Tariq Panja tweeted: “Police outside the stadium now in a standoff with a few thousand. Have had bottles thrown at them.

“Police spotter says she’s expecting worse at full time.”

Video posted by Ms Panja showed police dogs being deployed behind the main police line.

Some England fans without tickets succeeded in forcing their way into the stadium before kick-off.

Video posted on social media showed other England fans trying to stop them getting in, with people being punched and kicked on the floor.

Speaking to football writer Miguel Delaney spoke to an England supporter who said: “There are hundreds, maybe over a thousand, fans who have got in without tickets.

       “There's no police or security.

“People are scared. It's an absolute disgrace.”

He said: “Leicester Square is a mess though.

“Glass everywhere, England fans getting nicked for fighting England fans, a tree uprooted and chucked around for laughs. Don't get the attraction.”

The match was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince George also attended, and was pictured beaming after England scored within minutes of kick-off.
