‘Unimpressed!’ Charles let down by local legend amid annual Wales Week visit

On Thursday, during a solo trip to the parish of Nevern, just east of Newport, The Prince of Wales was treated to a tour of St. Brynach’s church - home to a peculiar legend surrounding a mysterious bleeding yew tree. However, according to the church’s minister, Stephen Watkins, nature-loving Charles was more interested in the tree than the legend.

Mr Watkins told People magazine: “He was not really impressed with the legends.

“He was more interested in the botanical reasons why it bleeds.

“I told him that, after the heavy rain we had in May, I noticed it was coming a great deal more.

“I think it is rainwater mixing with the heartwood.”

The tree is believed to have lived in the church grounds for more than seven centuries and has been ‘bleeding’ a slow trickle of thick red sap for hundreds of years.

There are many different interpretations of the legend but one popular story suggests the tree is a magical memorial.

As the story goes, an innocent man was hung on the tree but before his death he told bystanders the tree would bleed in memory of him forever.

However, Mr Watkins believes in a more religious reason - that the tree mirrors and shows sympathy for the sacrifice of Christ.

The church is also home to an ancient Celtic cross and is situated on the pilgrim’s trail which leads to St. David’s at the Western tip of South Wales.

It is estimated around 25,000 people visit the church yard every year.

The Prince of Wales trip to Pembrokeshire comes as part of his annual Wales Week visit.

In addition, his visit to St. Brynach’s comes as part of a themed outing around churches as it is the centenary anniversary of the Church in Wales.

The celebration was supposed to take place last year but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 1920, the Church in Wales became an independent part of the Anglican communion after centuries of being part of the Church of England.
