Kemi Badenoch has ripped into Sir Keir Starmer by saying "he always folds" during a clash at Prime Minister's Questions. The Tory leader took aim at the Prime Minister amid resident doctors' plans for a five-day strike later this month.

Mrs Badenoch said Sir Keir “folds in every negotiation and claims that it is a triumph”. She told the Commons: "He also promised, in fact, he boasted that he solved the doctors strike but only a Prime Minister who was so weak and giving a 28% payrise to doctors, only now we see that they're still voting to strike again. He folds in every negotiation and claims that it is a triumph. Yes, he does."

Anderson loses it after Farage heckled

Lee Anderson erupted after Nigel Farage was heckled by MPs during PMQs.

The Reform UK leader faced shouts in the Commons as he asked a question about Brexit and immigration.

Raising a point of order following PMQs, Ashfield MP Mr Anderson said: "During PMQs today the honourable member for Clacton asked what I thought was quite a reasonable question because I knew what the question was going to be.

"But during PMQs I couldn't hear a single word and I'm sure people in this chamber couldn't because people like the honourable member for Dewsbury behind me never shut up all the way through.

"We do not subscribe to this sort of dog whistle politics in Reform UK so Mr Speaker could you please give us advice how to stop this behaviour in the future?"

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle replied: "I think Mr Farage is capable of dealing with his own battles as we've seen on many occasions.

"It is about respect, it is about tolerance, that we should show to each other because what we do in here is reflected outside.

"So please let us show common sense but respect for each other."

Any new cash for France must be 'conditional' - Davey

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey insisted any further money for France to stop small boats must be “conditional”.

He said: “Does the Prime Minister agree that any new funding to the French government must be conditional on them agreeing a returns deal and doing their bit to stop the boats?”

Sir Keir Starmer replied: “We are working closely with the French on this issue. We will only provide funding that delivers for our priorities.”

Farage heckled as he asks question

Nigel Farage was heckled by MPs as he attempted to ask a question about immigration and Brexit during PMQs.

The Reform UK leader said the issue was the driving force behind the 2016 vote to leave the EU.

The Clacton MP said: “Does the Prime Minister understand that that demand today is even greater than it was back in 2016 and that we demand, the country demands, that you say to the French president we will not accept undocumented migrants across the English Channel and that you are not dictated to by an increasingly arrogant anti-Brexit French president.”

Sir Keir Starmer replied: “We are fixing the mess that we inherited. We are working with other countries to ensure that we take the measures necessary to stop people crossing the Channel.

“They are serious answers to serious problems. His proposal, for 10 years wagging the Tory dog, has been to break everything and claim that is how you fix things, to stick two fingers up at your neighbours and then expect them to work with us and he votes against the Borders Bill which gives more powers to our law enforcement to deal with security at our borders.

“The reason for that is he has no interest in fixing the problem because he wants to milk it and exploit it. That is the truth about him and his party.”

Starmer 'dragging us back to the 1970s'

Kemi Badenoch accused Sir Keir Starmer of "dragging us back to the 1970s".

The Tory leader said: “Yesterday the OBR said that our economy is being eroded under Labour. Doctor strikes. Tax bombshells. The wealthy leaving in droves.

“Isn’t the truth that under him he is dragging us back to the 1970s?”

The Prime Minister hit back and said: “Responsibility? We are responsible for four million extra appointments in the NHS. We are responsible for a 10-year plan on the future of the NHS after they broke it.”

Badenoch demands PM rules out wealth tax

Kemi Badenoch called on Sir Keir Starmer to rule out a wealth tax following a suggestion by Labour grandee Lord Kinnock.

The Tory leader said: "Now he's flirting with Neil Kinnock's demand for a wealth tax. Let's be honest about what that means, this is a tax on all of our constituents' savings, on their houses, on their pensions, it would be a tax on aspiration. Will the Prime Minister rule this out?"

Sir Keir replied: "She says we shouldn't be asking them for advice on the economy. She's absolutely right about that, we will not be asking for their advice.

"What we did in the budget was stabilise the economy through the measures taken by the Chancellor, what has that led to? Four interest rate cuts, for mortgage holders that is hugely important, compare and contrast what happened to the Liz Truss mini-budget. The fastest growth in the G7 in the first quarter of this year. Wages up more in the first 10 months of the Labour Government than the 10 years under the Tories. So no, we don't need lessons from them."

Badenoch slams Starmer over council tax

Kemi Badenoch said: "Investors are fleeing the country. He says he sticks to his manifesto promises. They promised not to put a tax on working people, and then we got the jobs tax, and all we've seen is jobs disappearing.

"Before the election the Prime Minister promised, and I quote, 'Not a penny more on your council tax'. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) says that now council tax bills will rise at their fastest rate in 20 years. Will the Prime Minister admit that under him, council tax is set to soar?"

Sir Keir said: "No, of course it's not. It soared under the last government. But, Mr Speaker, here she goes again. Back on familiar territory. She comes here complaining about the National Insurance rise every week, she comes here complaining, and then when she's asked the question, 'Well would you have the courage then to reverse it?' What's the answer? No. And I'll tell you for why, because she's too embarrassed to say she doesn't want the investment we've put in.

"That investment went in the NHS, they want the investment, they can't say how they're going to pay for it. That is what got us into the problem in the first place."

Millions of pensioners at risk of being dragged into income tax, Badenoch warns

Kemi Badenoch warned that OAPs with no income other that the state pension could be pulled into the taxman's net if the tax-free personal allowance remains frozen.

She said: "The whole house would have heard him fail to rule out freezing tax thresholds. He could say with the first question, he could promise, but he couldn't this time round. But what does this mean, Mr Speaker? He's talking about record investment and more jobs, we know that people are losing their jobs. Unemployment has gone up every single month since their year in office, but what does it mean on this issue of tax thresholds?

"It means that under Labour, millions of our poorest pensioners face being dragged into income tax for the first time ever. Does the Prime Minister think it is right that struggling pensioners should face a retirement tax?"

Sir Keir Starmer said: "We will stick to our manifesto commitments, we will stick to our fiscal rules. This is a language they don't understand. That's what got us into the problem in the first place.

"And whilst she comes here every week to talk the country down, that investment, record investment, £120 billion, that will be good, well paid jobs across the country. This investment is foreign investors who could choose whether to invest in this country, they're choosing to invest in this country now because they've got confidence in what this Government is doing."

Starmer won't commit to unfreezing tax thresholds

Kemi Badenoch asked Sir Keir Starmer if he would end the freeze on income tax thresholds.

She said: "The Chancellor promised that she would lift the freeze on income tax and national insurance thresholds because in her words, they hurt working people. Is that still Government policy?"

The Prime Minister replied: "We are absolutely fixed on our fiscal rules. We remain committed to them.

"We remain committed to our budget, to our manifesto commitments. I realise that sticking to your fiscal rules and your manifesto commitments is a bit unfamiliar to the party opposite but it's because of the decisions the Chancellor took, that this Government has taken, that we can update the House, £120 billion of inward investment into this country since we took office, business confidence at a nine-year high, that's longer than the leader of the Opposition has been in Parliament, Deloitte this week saying the UK's now the best place to invest, creating 384,000 jobs.

"What a contrast to the mess we inherited from the party opposite."

Badenoch uses first question to ask about tax hikes

Kemi Badenoch pressed Sir Keir Starmer on whether he stood by a Labour manifesto commitment not to raise a series of taxes.

The Tory leader asked: "In their manifesto last year, Labour promised not to increase income tax, not to increase national insurance and not to increase VAT.

"Does the Prime Minister still stand by his promises?"

       He replied: "Yes."

Mrs Badenoch then said: "It is rare that he's able to give a clear answer but I am glad that he has done so."

Labour minister insists Government is trying to reduce migrant 'pull factors'

Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said the Government was already working to reduce the "pull factors" attracting migrants to risk the English Channel crossing to reach the UK.

In response to concerns about "pull factors" he told ITV's Good Morning Britain: "That is why this Government is cracking down on illegal working and why there have been over 7,000 arrests in that space."

Work in countries that migrants travel through on the way to the Channel coast was also important, he added.

He also welcomed the French authorities' tougher action on the Channel beaches.

After footage emerged of French police slashing the boats used by migrants, Mr Thomas-Symonds said: "We do welcome that action taken in shallow waters."

He said "we have to evolve our law enforcement capacity" in response to changing tactics from people smugglers.

Macron could stop small boats 'tomorrow', Jenrick insists

French President Emmanuel Macron could stop small boats crossing the Channel “tomorrow” if he wanted to, Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick has insisted.

He told GB News: “It's important that we have good relations with our nearest neighbour, France, but I think Macron and the French could be doing so much more to help us.

“If they wanted, they could stop the small boats, frankly, tomorrow, if they got their gendarmes out on the beaches, into the shallow waters, turning back the boats, as some of our other neighbours do, like the Belgians, for example.

“But I don't think we should just be leaving this to the kindness of strangers. We've got to have our own sovereign deterrent."

Government insists ministers not 'dragging our heels' over Post Office compensation

Ministers are not “dragging our heels” over compensation payments to victims of the infected blood scandal, Nick Thomas-Symonds said.

The Cabinet Office minister told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that he did not want to impose any further delays after “decades of injustice”.

A report into the timeliness of compensation for those affected is due to be published on Wednesday, following additional hearings of the Infected Blood Inquiry.

Mr Thomas-Symonds said “we’re not dragging our heels” and more than 2,000 people have been invited to start their claims process by the Infected Blood Compensation Authority.

“Over 600 have been paid, and we’ve paid out over £488 million,” he said, adding that he had been “very open that there are areas that I am willing to look at, listening to the voice of victims”.

He said: “My priority is to ensure that we’re not creating even further delay after decades of injustice.”

Labour minister grilled on one-in, one-out migrant deal

Government minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said he would not give a "running commentary" on negotiations with the French on a one in, one out deal for cross-Channel migrants.

But he insisted joint working with the French was already making a difference, despite record numbers making the trip in small boats so far in 2025.

The Cabinet Office minister told Times Radio: "I'm not going to give a running commentary on discussions on specific proposals.

"But with regard to the work that is going on with France to tackle the small boat crossings in the English Channel, we can already see that bearing fruit."

He acknowledged the high number of crossings in the first half of the year but added: "Our work with the French authorities has prevented 12,000 people from crossing the Channel. We've seized 600 small boats.

"Now, I'm not saying for a moment this isn't a difficult problem to solve. There is no silver bullet for it, but that work with the French, that joint work with the French, is hugely important, and it will only deepen."

Starmer and Macron to meet today

Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron will hold talks at No 10 as the UK pushes for France to do more to stop migrant crossings.

The French president arrived yesterday for the first state visit by an EU head of state since Brexit.

It comes as the UK has been pressing for tougher action from the French authorities on the beaches along the Channel coast.

The Prime Minister hopes to strike a "one in, one out" deal to send small boat migrants back to the continent, in exchange for the UK accepting asylum seekers in Europe who have a British link.

Alongside Downing Street talks, Sir Keir and Mr Macron are also expected to attend a reception with UK and French businesses and an event at the British Museum on Wednesday.

Their spouses, Brigitte Macron and Lady Victoria Starmer, will have tea and a tour of Downing Street together, followed by all four having lunch.

       PMQs at midday
