The woman, named Ayse Karatay, has now been moved from the intensive care unit to the general ward at the City Hospital in the city of Eskisehir in Turkey. The city of Eskisehir is located in western Turkey. The woman's son, Ibrahim, spoke to Turkish news agency Demiroren and told how his mother had fallen ill last month.

He said: "My mother fell ill at the age of 116.

"She stayed in the intensive care unit for three weeks.

"Her health is very good now and she is getting better."

He added that his mother had been given a shot of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine before she became infected with coronavirus.

On Tuesday, a hospital in Wales had to change its COVID-19 warning from amber to red.

This is because cases have soared with coronavirus patients filling ICU wards.

A leading doctor at the Aneurin Bevan Health Board in Wales has warned that coronavirus patients now make up the majority of intensive care patients.

Intensive care consultant at the Welsh hospital Ami Jones said that staff were "pretty gutted" to see the next wave of coronavirus patients.

Writing on Twitter, Dr Jones said: "Frustrating day for ABUHB (Aneurin Bevan Health Board) ITU staff today as we “flipped” the largest part of the unit from Amber (non-Covid) to red (Covid).

"Covid patients now make up the majority of our patients on the unit.

"We’re all pretty gutted that we’re facing this next wave of Covid patients.

"Vaccination has certainly weakened the link between infections and hospitalisations."

The latest official data reveals there are now more people in ICU with COVID-19 in Wales than there were when the Welsh assembly announced its firebreak lockdown last October.
