KOTA KINABALU: A man was killed in a boat collision in Sabah's Semporna district on Friday (May 6).
Semporna OCPD Supt Mohd Farhan Lee said the victim, in his 50s, was on a speedboat that had no lights on when the accident happened at around 7.20pm.
The man fell into the sea after the collision with a passenger boat near the Balimbing Jetty off Bum-Bum Island, he said.
There were seven people on the passenger boat that was headed towards Bum-Bum Island.
The victim, who was from the island, was alone on the speedboat, he said.
Supt Farhan said the boatman and a few passengers jumped into the sea to retrieve the victim.
"They took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later," he said.
Supt Farhand said the victim's body has been sent to the Tawau Hospital for a post-mortem while the boatman, 20s, has been remanded to facilitate investigations for causing the death of a person.
He reminded boat owners and operators to ensure safety features such as wearing life jackets and boats are properly lit when travelling in the dark.
He also called upon witnesses to provide information to the police to facilitate the investigation.
