Israel ceasefire deal on the brink as Hamas fails to hand over hostage list

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the ceasefire deal between his country and Hamas is at risk.

The ceasefire is set to start at 6.30am tomorrow, but Netanyahu says Hamas has not released the agreed list of the 33 hostages who are to be freed.

Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a speech this evening insisting Israel will not "relent" until all hostages are released.

He described the ceasefire as "temporary", adding he has the backing of incoming President Donald Trump to resume fighting if negotiations do not progress.

If Israel does restart the fighting, he said they will do so in new and "forceful" ways.

"If we must return to fighting, we will do that in new, forceful ways," he said.

"President Trump and President Biden have given full backing to Israel's right to return to combat if Israel concludes that negotiations on Phase B are futile."

In a statement released earlier today, Netanyahu's office reinforced Israel's position.

It read: "We will not move forward with the outline until we receive the list of hostages to be released, as agreed.

"Israel will not tolerate violations of the agreement. The sole responsibility lies with Hamas."

Netanyahu’s national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir says he will resign from the government in protest against the deal, Sky News reports as other ministers are also reportedly unhappy with the agreement. They have described it as a surrender to Hamas.

Earlier today, Israel's army said it intercepted a projectile from the Houthi’s with sirens sounding across central Israel.

Israel’s military also reported a second missile by the Yemen-based militants who said they would coordinate with Palestine in case of any violation to the ceasefire deal.

No casualties have been reported as a result of the missile attacks in Israel.

At the same time, Israeli war planes have attacked the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City and airstrikes hit central and southern Gaza today, Reuters reports.

The Israeli military said that since Friday it had struck Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters who were among 50 "terror targets" it hit across the Gaza Strip as plumes of smoke can be seen rising.
