KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno headquarters here was abuzz with activity as a supreme council meeting is being held on Tuesday night (Aug 17).
The meeting, with both physical and virtual attendees, is being held at Menara Dato Onn.
From 9pm, Umno MPs were seen arriving at the building.
Among them were Jempol MP Datuk Mohd Salim Sharif, Kimanis MP Datuk Mohamad Alamin, Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, Ketereh MP Tan Sri Annuar Musa, Kuala Krau MP Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said and Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong was also seen entering the building at 9.24pm followed by MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.
The meeting is crucial as Umno has to collectively decide on a single name as the party's candidate for the premiership.
This is as per Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun's directive, who said that Members of Parliament are to submit their vote in writing by 4pm Wednesday (Aug 18).
Earlier Tuesday, leaders of political parties had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
It is learnt that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been in the building since Tuesday afternoon.
On Monday (Aug 16), Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced his decision to resign as prime minister, saying it was in accordance with the Federal Constitution as he no longer commanded majority support of the Dewan Rakyat.
The Perikatan Nasional government was led by Muhyiddin since March last year.
