A man who previously had been shot while attempting a carjacking in Chicago, prosecutors said, was sentenced Monday to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to steal a car at gunpoint in Downers Grove.

Carlos Hendricks, 22, of Chicago, was the last of four defendants sentenced for the crime.

Before dawn on Feb. 6, 2020, in the 7400 block of Webster Street, prosecutors alleged, one of the victims awakened at home with pain from a kidney stone. Other family members decided to take him to get medical attention, and opened the garage door and started a car.

Soon after, about 4 a.m., a car pulled up on the street in front of the house and turned off its lights. Two individuals got out of the car and walked up to the garage, but after two people from the house confronted them, they ran back to the car, where one of them fired a gun at the woman, striking a neighbor’s shed behind her, prosecutors said.

The victims gave police a description of the car, which had been stolen in Chicago, and officers found the car and followed it into Chicago, where it crashed at Interstate 55 and Martin Luther King Drive. Four occupants ran from the car but were caught and arrested, police said.

Hendricks had a handgun at the time of his arrest, police said. They added that he’d been asleep in the back seat and woke up during the chase.

In December 2017, prosecutors alleged, Hendricks approached an off-duty Chicago police officer, pointed a gun at him and demanded his vehicle. The officer shot Hendricks in the abdomen and arrested him. Hendricks recovered, later pleaded guilty to armed robbery, and was sentenced to four years in prison in that case.

Co-defendants Lamourice Shepherd, 22, of Chicago, previously was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty in the case. Two juveniles, one of whom was alleged to be the shooter, also pleaded guilty and were ordered to be detained for an indeterminate amount of time, up to their 21st birthdays, at most.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said the sentence brought the case to a close. “While violent crimes such as this can leave a community feeling vulnerable,” he said, “knowing that those responsible will pay for their crimes can go a long way in restoring a community’s sense of security.”

Hendricks’ attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Under Illinois sentencing laws, Hendricks will be eligible for release after serving half of his sentence.
