A Chicago man was reported in critical condition after he failed to surface following a jump into a lake Saturday morning to retrieve a canoe near Round Lake, authorities said.
The man was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition after he was pulled unconscious from Highland Lake around 8:15 a.m., the Lake County sheriff’s office said.
The 42-year-old man was planning on canoeing, police said, but the canoe began floating away from the dock. The man jumped into the water to get the boat but did not resurface, police said.
He was not wearing a personal flotation device, police said.
Numerous agencies responded to the address in the 34400 block of North Circle Drive to search the water. The unconscious man was pulled from the lake and brought to the hospital.
Police are investigating, though they said there is no foul play suspected.
