British police have spoken out for the first time since the remains of a "lifeless" body were found in the search for missing teenager Jay Slater in Tenerife.

Lancashire Police, who previously offered to help with the investigation but were denied by Tenerife's Civil Guard, offered their thoughts and support to Jay's family.

The 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle went missing near Masca in the north of the island nearly a month ago on June 17 after attending a rave the night before in the south.

Following the music event, he travelled to the area with two men and stayed the night in their Airbnb, leaving in the morning to attempt the 11-hour walk back to his accommodation after missing the bus.

The desperate searches by police, Jay's family, and volunteers had found nothing until today, when Spanish officials revealed "everything is pointing" to the remains being Jay's.

In the wake of this news, Lancashire Police issued a statement sending well wishes to Jay's family as they await formal identification.

A spokesperson said: "We have today (Monday, July 15) been notified by the Guardia Civil that they have found the body of a man and that the indications are that this is Jay Slater.

"While at this stage no formal identification has been carried out our thoughts are very much with Jay’s family at this time, and we continue to offer them our support."

Earlier today, the Civil Guard confirmed that a "lifeless body" had been found "in the Masca area" and are working on the assumption that it is Jay's.

A spokesperson said: "After 29 constant days of searching the lifeless body of the young man has been found in the Masca area. The discovery has been possible thanks to the tireless and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard over these 29 days.

"Everything is pointing to the body being that of the young British man who disappeared on June 17, pending full identification. Initial inquiries are pointing to him having suffered an accident/fall in the area where he was found."

Just yesterday, Jay's heartbroken mother Debbie Duncan issued a devastating message, calling her son "typical young man" who was "loved by everyone".

She said: "We cannot put into words the heartache we are suffering as a family. Jay is a typical young man who loves life with a bright future ahead of him.

"This month will mark the end of his three year apprenticeship with the world at his feet. He is loved by everyone and has a close bond with his family and many many friends."
