GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow, who was a three-term assemblyman, has resigned from the party.

National Gerakan secretary-general Mak Kah Keong confirmed that Teng, 57, handed in his resignation two months ago.

"I can't confirm the exact date, but when it was sent to us, we told him to reconsider but to no avail.”

On the reasons for Teng's resignation, Mak said, "You will have to ask him."

Teng became a municipal councillor at the age of 28 before becoming a three-term assemblyman from 1995 to 2008.

He once served as political secretary to former chief minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

He quit as state chairman after losing in the last general election where he stood in the Tanjung Bungah state constituency.

Gerakan vice-president Oh Tong Keong said Teng's contribution to the party was immense.

"It is definitely a loss, as he groomed most of the young leaders today, including myself," added Oh.
