The shake caused tremors just 31 km south of Balayan, to the west of the island, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reports. It happened at an intermediate depth of 130 km beneath the epicentre at 4.48am local time (9.48pm GMT).

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the tremor could be revised in the next hours.

People who felt the tremor took to Twitter to share their experience.

One person said: “Man! I woke up because of it.

“I thought someone was shaking my bed. It was so long too.

       “I’m scared.”

Another user added: “Was talking to a customer service rep who suddenly said ‘earthquake, everyone is panicking’.

“He was so professional. Hope you are safe Glenn!”

In a separate tweet, they added: “I called back thinking the company might have rerouted calls, and heard wind-like noises.
