BANDAR BAHARU: With 61 still at large, the manhunt for the Rohingya inmates who escaped from the Relau temporary immigration detention depot in Sungai Bakap here will continue.
Kedah police chief Comm Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said as of 3pm on Monday (April 25), a total of 467 of the escapees have been returned to custody.
He said they consist of 243 men, 91 women, 68 boys and 65 girls.
"A total of 61 of them have yet to be found, comprising 51 men, six women, one boy and three girls.”
On Wednesday (April 20), a protest at around 5am at the depot by the detainees quickly turned into a riot.
A total of 528 of them broke out of the depot and during the escape.
Six detainees, including two children, were killed on the southbound side of the North-South Expressway while trying to cross the highway near Jawi.
By midnight on Thursday (April 21), a total of 448 detainees had been transferred to four separate Immigration depots: Langkap in Perak, Machap Umboo in Melaka, and Semenyih and Bukit Jalil in Selangor.
Villagers have been warned not to harbour escapees.
Those found doing so could face prosecution under Section 56 of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 and Section 216 of the Penal Code.
