SEREMBAN: Those aged 61 to 70 represented the biggest group in Negri Sembilan's 1,012 Covid-19 deaths so far, says the state government.

       According to the state health committee chairman, S. Veerapan, said as of Aug 31, 285 sexagenarians had died from the disease in the state.

       Deaths in the 71 to 80 age group were the second highest, with 190 fatalities.

       "The third-largest group - 51 to 60 years old - had 182 cases," he said in a reply to Chew Seh Yong (DAP-Lobak) during the question and answer session at the state legislative assembly here on Wednesday (Sept 8).

       Veerapan said detailed breakdown by age group are as follows: three deaths in the 11-20 age group, 24 deaths in the 21-30 group, 62 deaths (31-40), 116 (41-50), 134 (81-90), 14 (91-100), and two centenarians.

       District wise, Veerapan said Seremban had the highest number of deaths (665), followed by Port Dickson (100), Jempol (65), Tampin and Kuala Pilah (54 each), Rembau (46), and Jelebu (28).,

       Of the 1,012 fatalities, 567 or 56% were male. Forty-five of those who died were foreigners.

       Separately, Verapan said 52 individuals in the state had taken their own lives since May last year.

       Of these, 15 were foreigners.

       "Statistics show that 47 of them were males," he said.

       Among the reasons the individuals committed suicide were depression, financial and family problems and substance abuse.

       Fifteen were aged from 31 to 40, 13 were aged 21 to 30, and there were seven each in the 51 to 60, and 61 to 70, age groups.

       There was also one death in the seven to 10-year-old age group. ends
