JOHOR BARU: The sun was up again in parts of Johor, and with the floods receding, more evacuees were allowed to return home.

The five temporary relief centres (PPS) in Segamat and Tangkak were also closed with the improved weather.

State health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said the number of victims in five districts dropped from 4,449 at 8am to 3,985 victims as of 4pm yesterday.

“Segamat is still the worst hit district with 2,460 victims, followed by Tangkak (739), Muar (714), Batu Pahat (53) and Mersing (19).

“The good weather has helped the authorities to close the five PPS,” he said.

Vidyananthan said the PPS SK Tambang in Segamat had the most number of evacuees at 423, who were from Kampung Simpang Loi.

He said despite the better weather, there were still rivers at dangerous levels such as Sungai Muar near Buloh Kasap, Kampung Olak Sepam, Sungai Gemas and Panchor in Segamat, and Sungai Liang Batu and Sungai Muar in Muar.

Vidyananthan said 10 roads in Segamat remained closed to traffic namely Jalan Kuala Paya, Jalan Puting, Jalan Tumang, Jalan Jabi Kampung Bukit, Jalan Serakek, Jalan Tungku Tiga, Jalan Pogoh, Jalan Balai Polis Buluh Kasap, Jalan Senai-Gemas, and Jalan Felda Medoi.

He said two roads in Muar were also closed – Jalan Muar-Labis (Jambatan Sungai Tui) and Jalan Muar-Labis (Galeri Bukit Kepong), with Jalan Durian in Tangkak also cut off.
