Police and volunteers in Kenya are searching a rubbish dump for bodies after a suspected serial killer confessed to killing 42 women, including his own wife.

A gruesome search in a quarry now used as a dump near the country's capital Nairobi has already unearthed the nine mutilated female bodies.

Kenya's Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja told the media a man named Collins Jomaisi Khalisia has been arrested and admitted to the brutal tally of murders carried out since 2022.

It is reported the suspect latest victim could have been murdered on Thursday last week.

Pictures from the Mukuru quarry show scores of volunteers searching mounds of trash on Friday with several dismembered bodies found wrapped in plastic.

It is understood the suspect was arrested as he watched the Euro 2024 final, the BBC reports.

When the first bodies were found on Friday, police initially said they were pursuing possible links to cults, serial killers or rogue medical practitioners in their investigation into the macabre saga, which has horrified and angered ordinary people in Kenya.

Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), said: "[He] confessed to have lured, killed and disposed of 42 female bodies at the dumping site, all murdered between 2022 and as recent as Thursday.

"It is crystallising that we are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life, who has no respect and dignity."

According to police, the suspect took officers to a house where he lived just 100 yards from the quarry. Local media said 10 phones, a laptop, identity cards and female clothing were discovered.

Also among more horrifying finds were a machete and sacks which detectives believe would have been used to cut up and dispose of bodies.

The prime suspect in the case is due to appear in court tomorrow (Tuesday). Kenyan authorities said the women targeted are thought to have been aged between 18 and 30.

A second person with "a phone belonging to one of the victims" has also been arrested and would be treated as an accomplice or suspect, police said.

Post-mortem examinations of the bodies found so far are being conducted or are due to take place.
