German media fury at Merkel on Covid rules– 'She can jet to London, football fans can't'

Referring to Ms Merkel's contradiction in her lockdown rules, tabloid newspaper Bild stated: "One person is allowed to go, but no one else is!" On Friday, July 2, the German chancellor will fly to London to meet UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The two leaders hope to discuss coronavirus and "deepening the UK-Germany relationship".

German newspaper Bild articulated the frustration of German football fans and stated: "Thousands of Germans would also like to fly to London to support the national team in the European Championship game in London against England on Tuesday.

"But they are not allowed to, because the British stipulate a ten-day quarantine regulation upon entry from Germany, which you can shorten to five days with a negative test.

"Therefore there is not enough time for German football fans."

The newspaper added that Ms Merkel was able to travel to the UK because "special rules apply to political delegations".

The newspaper explained that politicians "only stay for a short time and move in tightly controlled corridors, politicians do not visit pubs, their stay is for work".

Writing about the coronavirus restrictions within the UK Bild added: "The corona entry regulations in Great Britain are tough.

"On arrival in England, fans have to present a negative PCR test and then go into quarantine.

"This lasts up to ten days, with two negative PCR tests on the second and fifth day you can be released from quarantine."

Germany faces England at Wembley on Tuesday, June 29.

German football coach Joachim L?w said: “Against England, it’s going to be a totally different match.

“They play at home, they want to attack, it’s going to be a more open match than it was tonight.

"We need to improve on things, we are aware of that.

"We need to be careful, especially at set-pieces.

"We can’t repeat the same mistakes again, we need to do things better.

"But the match will be a different one and we’re looking forward to it.”

Wembley was the scene of England's triumph over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final.

It was also where England lost the Euro 96 semi-final to Germany when Gareth Southgate missed a penalty.
