There are many good places for thrill-seekers to go on holiday but few of them also offer pristine beaches and gorgeous ocean water.

       But one island country in Africa combines relaxing on the beach with the possibility of climbing a massive active volcano.

       That would be Cape Verde, which has become a popular destination for British tourists, with its year-round sunshine, stunning beaches, and rich culture.

       But the island nation is also home to one of the most active volcanoes in the Atlantic Ocean, Pico do Fogo.

       Located on the island of Fogo, Pico do Fogo rises 2,829 metres above sea level, making it the highest peak in Cape Verde.

       It is also the only active volcano in the archipelago, having erupted more than 30 times since the 15th century.

       Its most recent eruption in 2014 forced the evacuation of the village of Ch？ das Caldeiras, which was later buried under lava.

       Despite its volcanic activity, Fogo remains a popular destination for adventurous travellers. The mountain’s slopes are used for coffee farming, and visitors hike up the volcanic cone and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

       The country as a whole has seen a rise in tourism, with British visitors making up the largest group, accounting for 36.6% of all tourist arrivals in 2022.

       This is partly due to the islands' warm climate, which ranges between 26C and 30C in the summer, making it an attractive getaway throughout the year.

       While many tourists flock to the beaches of Sal and Boa Vista, others choose to explore other equally as stunning places on offer.

       For example, the island of Santo Ant？o is known for its lush green mountains and deep valleys, while S？o Nicolau has a mix of rugged cliffs and beautiful hiking trails.

       S？o Vicente, on the other hand, is famous for its music scene, with live performances in bars and cafés almost every night.

       Cape Verde’s beaches are unsurprisingly a massive attraction, with Santa Maria Beach on Sal, Praia de Chaves on Boa Vista, and Laginha Beach in Mindelo among the most popular.

       For those looking for something more active, guided hikes up Pico do Fogo allow visitors to experience the crater up close, with panoramic views from the summit.

       Despite its history of eruptions, the volcano continues to attract plenty of tourists eager to explore it.
