Chiapas horror crash: At least 53 dead after semi-truck overturns on major Mexican highway

       A traffic collision in Chiapas, a southern Mexican state bordering Guatemala, involved a vehicle transporting Central American migrants, the Mexican President confirmed. Francisco Alvarado, delegate of the Red Cross in Chiapas, revealed so far 49 migrants have died following the accident.

       Mr Alvarado also told CNN the National Institute of Migrants is currently assisting the migrants who were part of the accident.

       Taking to Twitter Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 68, expressed his sorrow and empathised with the families of the victims to his 8.3 million followers.

       He wrote on Twitter: “I deeply regret the tragedy caused by the overturning of a trailer in Chiapas that was transporting Central American migrants.

       “It is very painful.

       “I hug the families of the victims.”

       His post was liked nearly ten thousand times and retweeted nearly three thousand times.

       Governor of Chiapas Rutilio Escandón, 63, also offered his condolences following the tragic incident and promised the wounded would be treated.

       Mexico's Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, 62, also took to social media to confirm the victims' foreign ministries will be contacted.

       Writing to his 2.2 million followers, he said: “Serious accident in Chiapas with victims of nationals of other countries.

       “My condolences to the victims and affected families.

       “In communication with the State Government and Civil Protection we make contact with the foreign ministries of the affected countries.”

       His post was liked over 2,000 times and retweeted over 600 times.

       The Civil Protection of Chiapas announced on its Facebook page the accident occurred on the top of the Belisario Domínguez and Ribera Cauharé bridge in Chiapa de Corzo.
