PASIR GUDANG: A teenager drowned while swimming in a river near a resort at Ulu Tiram, Sungai Layang near here on Monday (March 7).
Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue station chief Ibrahim Omar said it received an emergency call at 5.29pm over the incident.
"Nine firemen from the station were deployed to the scene with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicle and an Emergency Medical Response Services (EMRS) vehicle," he said in a statement.
Ibrahim said the operations were led by senior officer II Mohd Yusri Atan, adding that the team used a fisherman’s boat in the search and rescue operations.
He said the victim, identified as Mohd Yazid Anuar, 17, was found about 13m away from the river bank of the two-metre deep river.
"The victim was pronounced dead by the paramedic team from the Health Ministry who was at scene," said Ibrahim.
He said the victim’s friends - Aniq Anis and Mohd Asyraf Faisal - both 14, survived the incident.
The body had been handed over to the police for further action. The operations ended at 7.23pm.
Separately, the Johor Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that the flash flood which hit a supermarket in Saleng, Kulai had receded.
It said the flood, which hit Kampung Baru Muafakat, Gelang Patah at 5pm, had also receded.
"As of now, no villagers were evacuated and the Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue station is monitoring the situation," said the statement.
