A man was killed after being shot while in a car on Harlem Avenue in Oak Park Tuesday afternoon, Oak Park police said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was 22 years old and from Chicago, according to Oak Park Village spokesman David Powers.

Natalia Derevyanny, spokesperson for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, said Wednesday that the man’s next of kin had yet to be notified.

The man was stopped in traffic shortly before 5 p.m. while heading north on Harlem Avenue near Garfield Street when another vehicle pulled up alongside him and someone from that second car fired multiple shots, Oak Park police said.

The victim was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he later died.

The offending vehicle, described only as a dark-colored SUV, was last seen traveling west on Harrison Street from Harlem Avenue, Oak Park police said.

Powers said he did not know if there was any surveillance video of the incident or if the victim knew the offender.

Northbound Harlem Avenue was closed temporarily and the Oak Park police are getting help from the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force with the investigation, according to a press release from the village.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Oak Park police department at 708-386-3800. Information may also be provided anonymously by calling 708.434.1636 or online at www.oak-park.us/crimetip
