       If you’re looking for a holiday off the beaten track, you could do a lot worse than the “jewel of the Highlands” - the stunningly quaint village of Plockton.

       Settled in the Highlands’ Wester Ross area, around 15 minutes from the idyllic Isle of Skye, Plockton overlooks Loch Carron and is home to less than 500 people.

       The National Trust of Scotland conservation village is situated on an inlet with a harbour set up for 15 yachts, allowing visiting groups to explore the surrounding area via the Highlands’ lochs.

       Perhaps the most attractive spot in this enchanting corner of North West Scotland is Coral Beach. With clear waters you’d expect to find surrounding a Caribbean island set against the silhouette of the Highland mountains, the small sandy stretch is truly other-worldly.

       Once you’ve taken in such overwhelming scenery, you may find yourself hankering for some local cuisine. And as if the natural surroundings weren’t enough, Plockton offers as many treats for the tastebuds as it does for the eyes.

       The Shores serves up sumptuous locally caught seafood and has previously taken the title of the home of the UK’s best fish and chips.

       If you’d rather take your food away and enjoy the crisp Highland air with your supper, then the Harbour Fish Bar will certainly do the trick.

       The village itself is a collection of gorgeous postcard cottages which look out over Loch Carron. But for visitors, Plockton is exceptionally well-equipped for its size, with self-catered chalets, hotels, B&Bs and bunkhouses which can sleep 20 and cost as little as ￡18 per person per night - ideal for large group getaways.

       As spring turns to summer, so do the sailors hoist their sales and take to the open water. You don’t have to be an America’s Cup professional seafarer to have a go though, with training sessions and courses open to all visitors.

       There are also annual fishing and rowing competitions as well as sailing and yacht races.

       Just over four hours in the car from Glasgow, this tiny Scottish village may just be the summer holiday destination you’ve been looking for.
