RESPONDENTS (27%) of a survey say their stock selections are based on fundamental analysis while 26% do their own research.
Others look at technical analysis (18%), expert advice (13%), share price value -penny stocks preferred (13%) when choosing the stocks to invest in.
A total of 11% based their stock selection on thematic plays such as the gloves maker rally of 2020.
These are some of the findings from the 2021 retail investors’ sentiment survey by CGS-CIMB.
The respondents (19%) seek investment advice from brokers or analyst reports, 18% get their guidance from online sources.
However, the three biggest concerns when investing into the stock market are domestic economy/politics, external factors (global stock market performance and global economy) as well as sharp falls in stocks/markets.
Of those surveyed, 89% indicated that their current disposable incomes remained below pre-Covid-19 levels, with over half of the respondents reporting incomes at 60% or below pre-pandemic levels, according to CGS-CIMB.
The survey covered 1,044 retail investors from April 20 to May 31 with a view to understand Malaysian retail investors’ preferences, views and investment strategies.
Retail investors are the largest participants at 37% share of trades in the first five months of 2021. They are also net buyers of the Malaysia equities market worth RM6.4bil, according to the survey.
