Embroiled in a bitter row with his Norfolk neighbours, a wealthy ex-fund manager has been fighting to continue to rent out his 17th-century mansion for "Ibiza-style" parties.

But, Darren Swayne, 51, the owner of a 10-bedroom mansion called Hill House, has now lost his battle to rent it out, much to the delight of locals.

The party house can accommodate up to 25 guests and has features such as an iPad controlled chandelier, secret laser lights and a cinema screen inside the property.

Locals have complained about the noise and disruption from stag and hen parties which they claim can go on for days.

The disruption became so unbearable for the villagers, one local councillor even won his seat because he pledged to stop the house in the village of Saxlingham, Nethergate, from being rented out.

The house sits among a sprawling six acres of land and it includes a tennis court, a basketball hoop, and an outdoor hot tub.

A previous housing description on TripAdvisor, advertising the property for rent, claimed Mr Swayne can even organise activities such as an F1 simulator or life-sized Cluedo, which suggests these are activities for large groups.

The MailOnline reports Mr Sayers began using his land for large-scale glamping events in 2019, and the feud among locals has been raging on for years.

Villagers have been putting up with excessive noise and drunken shouting from the site. Adults have also been accused of running through the quiet streets, playing tag in the village, and locals say some events attracted crowds of up to 200 people.

The outrage saw villagers in Saxlingham Nethergate, which has a population of under 700 people, according to the 2011 Census, set up a campaign group against the property’s use.

The former fund manager is now currently blocked from renting his mansion for parties since the South Norfolk Council has refused his application to hire out the home.

Mr Swayne had been seeking a certificate of lawfulness, which is a planning device confirming the use of a property is lawful, but this can be applied for once the land has had the same use continuously for 10 years.

Saxlingham Nethergate Parish Councillor, Mike Haslam, said: "The report rejects the assertion that the use has been established for 10 years."

Part of the reason was because of an "unauthorised use" of storage containers and the start of "field-based events" over the years, according to the council.

Mr Haslam added: "Villagers will be delighted that any further development will require planning permission."

'I want to address any concerns'

Mr Swyane said he did "not agree with the legal opinion" of the officers, but was grateful a decision had been made and wanted to discuss a way forward.

He added: "Whilst the applications were being considered we also took the opportunity to communicate further with the local community, understand opportunities, and address any concerns."

Villagers, however, can now breathe a sigh of relief. Local councillor, John Cook, said: "The village and myself are completely relieved by the decision.

"It's been a stressful nine months for all of us but it is a great example of the planning system working properly and I believe it has come to the right conclusion. Hopefully now the village can come together and move forward."

For now, it is unclear what the rejection means for people who currently have bookings with the £5,140-a-weekend venue.
