BRITS have been warned that the soggy summer is set to continue and a heatwave is NOT on the cards this year.

The grim news follows a damp and dreary August - filled with torrential rain, flooding and thunderstorms across the country.

The Met Office said there was little to no hope of a belated blast of sunshine before September.

Forecaster Steven Keates said: "This Summer is not going to be remembered for warmth. It's been very bland.

"We've had flooding, some parts of the country have seen double their average rainfall and temperatures have been unremarkable.

"It's been wishy-washy to say the least - and that's how it's going to end."

He added: "A heatwave is not on the cards - but let's not give up hope altogether.

"Some September's have come up trumps over recent years."

The Met Office said that rainfall in August has again been average - although northern Ireland has seen 89 per cent rainfall where you would expect it to be 50 per cent.

And the UK has seen fewer sunshine hours this month- meaning the days have been dull although temperatures have remained average.

Today is set to be cloudy in most areas - with patchy drizzle to start off the summer morning.

The North East will see the best of the sunshine and will turn out warm - but it's going to be grey for everyone else.

And looking into the weekend, there will be a cloudy start Thursday, before the cloud breaks and heavy showers develop.

The Met Office said that Friday is set to be a fine day for many - but the good weather won't last very long, as "erratic" rain will start battering those in the West on Saturday.

It comes after meteorologists said Brits are set to enjoy a late summer heatwave with a "warmer, drier, and sunnier end of meteorological summer."

The hot weather is making its way from Spain where record-breaking temperatures above 40C over the coming days, as temperatures soared across Europe.

Netweather also echoed the predictions with their long-range forecast, adding that there was a "strong signal for above-average pressure during this period".

They dubbed the hot spell a "taste of summer" after a miserable start to the month.

Meteorologists said high pressure "would cover much of the country", seeing "spells of quiet, dry and probably sunny weather."
