Lamiko Wheeler, 44, of Temple Hills, Md., was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault on a police officer while armed, and other gun and ammunition crimes, police said Sunday.
No officers or other civilians were hit, and no one involved in the incident suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
The incident began, according to police, as a verbal dispute between Wheeler and the other person at around 1 p.m. at the 400 block of Oakwood Street Southeast. As a result of their fight, Wheeler shot the other man in “the lower region,” police said.

Summoned by an emergency call, D.C. police found the man, identified as Wheeler, lying on his chest in the middle of the street, pointing the gun he’d allegedly used against his acquaintance at the officers, according to D.C. police Assistant Chief Andre Wright, who gave a news conference Saturday.

Officers, clad in body cameras, gave “several verbal loud commands” for Wheeler to drop the weapon, Wright said. When he didn’t, police said, two District police officers fired, striking Wheeler. Police said Wheeler also fired his gun at the officers.
Wheeler suffered a graze wound to his head that is not life-threatening, said Kristen Metzger, a police spokeswoman. The gun was retrieved, Wright said.

The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, police said, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
“We believe that this event was an isolated event between the two individuals,” Wright said. “And that there’s no more danger to the community at large.”
According to the police department’s policies, the officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, while the body-camera footage is under review.
