MELAKA: Several houses in Taman Merdeka, Batu Berendam and Malim here are expected to be hit by a fresh round of floods as Sungai Malim is on the verge of bursting its banks following continuous downpour since Saturday (Jan 1).

       The water level of the river also has reached a dangerous level and is expected to cause floods if the rain continues until late Sunday evening (Jan 2).

       The water level at the Sungai Melaka at the Melaka Pindah tributary has also surpassed the dangerous level while the Melaka Tengah district is the latest district to be impacted by the flood when several houses were inundated in ankle-deep water, since morning.

       The latest evacuation exercise within the Melaka Tengah district involved 215 flood victims from Taman Merdeka Jaya and Taman Thamby Chik Karim.

       The headcount was made at 3.30pm on Sunday (Jan 2) and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman is currently rendering aid to the victims at an evacuation centre in Taman Merdeka.

       Villagers at Kampung Morten also said they are keeping vigil after their homes were flooded since Sunday morning.

       Kampung Morten, which is situated in the heart of the historic city, has been experiencing floods for the third time since December last year.

       Resident Mohd Rahman Amin, 55, said flood water has receded on Sunday (Jan 2) afternoon but the villagers are not taking it for granted.

       "The rain has yet to stop and water flowing from the upstream could result in another round of flooding here," he said.

       Meanwhile, 1,225 flood victims were evacuated and temporarily sheltered at 17 flood relief centres, statewide.

       Melaka Civil Defence Force director Left Kol (PA) Cuthbert John Martin Quadra said the 24 areas in the state were impacted by the floods where 14 of these sites are in Alor Gajah, seven in Melaka Tengah followed by three in Jasin.
