IPOH: A few days before former Kampar MP Tan Sri Hew See Tong passed away, he was still showing people around the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Hospital project site.

       Hew, who passed away due to complications from pneumonitis yesterday, had donated the land for the setting up of the then Tunku Abdul Rahman College’s (TARC) third campus.

       His grandson Isaac Hew said Hew had been active before feeling unwell last Wednesday.

       “He was still showing people around the UTAR Hospital project site, bringing friends and potential donors to look around.

       “He had no serious health conditions except for high blood pressure,” said the 24-year-old engineer in an interview.

       Hew passed away at a private hospital here at about 6am yesterday. He was 91.

       He leaves behind his wife, Puan Sri Woon Mun Fah, 86, three children and nine grandchildren.

       Formerly a tin miner, Hew was also a well-known philanthropist, developer and educator.

       Besides donating the land for TARC – now Tunku Abdul Rahman University College – he was known to have started Bandar Baru Kampar.

       Joining MCA when he was 28, Hew was a three-term MP for Kampar from 1995 to 2008 as well as the state party treasurer from 1977 to 2005.

       Isaac said his grandfather was humble, down-to-earth and had a big heart for Kampar.

       “He was a kind and wonderful father, grandfather, mentor and the best of friends,” he said.

       Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said Hew was a philanthropist who tirelessly assisted the people, especially in Kampar.

       The Perak MCA chairman said Hew’s contributions and good deeds had left an everlasting impression on society, adding that he was highly respected by the people.

       “He was an exemplary businessman and philanthropist who truly cared and always worked for the betterment of society. He was a firm believer of always giving back to society.

       “His contribution to (then) Tunku Abdul Rahman College and UTAR will be remembered for having a positive impact on society,” said Dr Mah.

       UTAR, he added, had developed into a renowned university, producing many capable minds and human resources.

       “UTAR Hospital is also progressing well – thanks to his guidance. His children will continue his legacy,” he said.

       MCA Youth secretary-general Daniel Wa said he had spoken to Hew a few days before he was admitted to hospital last Wednesday.

       “We talked for a good 20 minutes. Just earlier this month, he was still driving out to meet friends for meals,” he said.

       Funeral services will be held at 1001, Jalan Seksyen 1/1 Bandar Baru Kampar on Wednesday, with the paying of last respects to start at 9.15am.
