A MUM and daughter could be kicked out of their home on Christmas Day after complaining about mould "that left them struggling breathe".

Tanya Hull claims the "unbearable" house in Dromara, Co Down is riddled with damp which coated the furniture and "ruined" clothing.

Now, the mum - a full-time carer for her daughter - faces being booted out after refusing to sign a tenancy agreement which stated the house is "fit to live in".

A letter said the property's handover date, the day they need to be out of there, is on 25 December 2021, Tanya told Belfast Live.

She said: "For the past few months living in this house has become unbearable, my daughter and I have both started having bad respiratory problems due to the mould and it is having a really bad effect on our mental health."

The landlord has denied that the house has a mould issue.

Tanya added: "All we have asked for is somewhere decent to live, but none of the issues that we have raised has been addressed by the landlord, who has told us to leave on Christmas Day after I refused to sign a tenancy agreement which would have said the house is fit to live in when it is not.

Tanya has been working with her local council's environmental health team who are investigating the property.

Experts sent by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Environmental Health Department found "damp in excess" and ordered the landlord to "remove all damp-affected plaster".

The landlord has denied threatening to kick Tanya and her daughter out on Christmas - and said there is no damp in the house.

They also said any issues in the property were caused by the tenant.
