Police in Devon have confirmed six people died after a gunman went on a shooting spree in Plymouth on Thursday night.

Officers said two females and two males were deceased at the scene, while a woman treated in hospital for gunshot wounds has also died. One of the deceased is reported to be a young girl. A male, believed to be the suspect, was also dead at the scene.

Here is everything we know so far.

       What happened?

Officers responded just after 6pm following reports of a man shooting people near Biddick Drive, in the Keyham area of Plymouth, and placed parts of the city into lockdown.

Devon & Cornwall police said: "Following attendance at the scene, two females and two males were deceased at the scene. A further male, believed to be the offender, was also deceased at the scene. All are believed to have died from gunshot wounds.

"Another female treated at the scene for gunshot wounds, died a short time later in hospital.

"All of the next of kin of the deceased have been located and informed by Devon & Cornwall Police officers."

The incident was not being treated as terror related.

Eyewitnesses claimed the man had “gone berserk” before opening fire.

Videos circulating on social media on Thursday night appeared to show a bloodstained body lying on the pavement under a white sheet, with officers urging members of the public to stay inside.

It is the first mass shooting in the UK for 11 years.

       Who is the gunman?

The suspect was named locally on Thursday night as Jake Davison.

Police said the gunman was found dead from a gunshot wound at the scene.

       Who are the victims?

There were reports the victims included the shooter’s parents.

The names and ages of the victims have not been released, but local MP Luke Pollard said one of the people killed was a child "under ten years old".

Unconfirmed reports from witnesses said the victims included a man shot in the stomach and an elderly woman.

One eyewitness wrote on social media: “There’s [a man] on the rampage in my cul-de-sac with a real gun and he’s already shot two people.

“They are laying on the ground. One is dead – blood everywhere. I’m shaking like leaf.”

Another said: “The guy shot members of his family then went out onto the street.”

A witness named Sharon, who lives near Biddick Drive told the BBC: “Firstly, there was shouting, followed by gunshots - three, possibly four to begin with.

“This was when the shooter kicked in the door of a house and randomly started shooting ... he ran from the house shooting as he ran and proceeded to shoot at a few people in the Linear Park up from the drive.”

Robert Pinkerton, 54, told Plymouth Live that he was on Henderson Place when he heard a loud bang. He turned a corner and bumped into a man, and “swerved” when he saw the gun.

He said he saw an injured woman in the doorway of a hairdressers and witnessed a man trying to give her medical attention.

Mr Pinkerton said the man walked past him towards the garages and he stayed with the injured woman.

       How did police respond?

Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were called to a serious firearms incident in Biddick Drive, in the Keyham area of Plymouth at around 6.10pm. Officers and ambulance staff attended.

"There have been a number of fatalities at the scene and several other casualties are receiving treatment. A critical incident has been declared.

"The area has been cordoned off and police believe the situation is contained.

“Road closures are in place so please avoid the area. We are appealing to the public not to speculate or share pictures.”

Priti Patel: 'I urge everyone to remain calm'

Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, described the incident as “shocking”. “My thoughts are with those affected,” she said.

“I have spoken to the chief constable and offered my full support. I urge everyone to remain calm, follow police advice and allow our emergency services to get on with their jobs.”

MPs have appealed for calm. Luke Pollard, the Labour MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said he was awaiting confirmation of the number of victims, saying the situation looked like “a very grim day for our city and our community”.

Johnny Mercer, the Conservative MP for Plymouth Moor View, said: “The incident is not terror related, and neither is the suspect on the run in Plymouth. Remain calm.

"It is for the police to confirm further details. Do not repost chatter or gossip; work with them. We have the best cops in the land.”

Plymouth City Council said an "awful tragedy has happened in our city tonight".

In a tweet, the council said: "While we don't know all of the details, our hearts go out to everyone affected by this terrible incident."
